Gen3 - Software - Apply update file to Gen3-LMS

The following instructions will describe copying an update file to the Gen3-LMS SD card so that an update can be applied.
  1. Remove the SD card from the Gen3 display and insert into the laptop
    Note: The Gen-3 Configuration Tool user manual here explains in more detail and shows how to remove the SD card from the display
  2. Copy the supplied update.tar file to the SD card
  3. If necessary rename the file update.tar, if it's named update (1).tar or something else the Gen3 will not recognise it as an update file and the update will not be applied
  4. Click Safely Remove Hardware from the system tray to safely remove the SD card from the laptop
  5. Insert the SD card into the Gen3 display
  6. Start the engine to power the Gen3 LMS
  7. The display will boot to the update screen, wait for the update to complete and reboot
    Note: If the display did not show the update screen before booting to the main screen, then the update file has been copied or named correctly, repeat from step 2

WARNING: In Step 3 If your web browser or email client renames the update.tar file when downloading. You must rename the file back to update.tar or THE UPDATE WILL NOT WORK.
See the next section to turn on filename extensions.


Notes
To check the filenames are correct, make sure to turn on show File name extensions in the windows file manager. This enables visual verification.
Why might this be necessary?
The Linux kernal within the Gen3 display looks for very specific update files and their associated specific file extensions. If the Gen3 Display fails to see correctly named file(s), it will simply not apply any updates to its internal Operating System or Configurations.
