As part of the kit installation process, the Overwatch Genie RT harness requires some soldering
This Tech Doc was not written as a step by step installation guide, but rather further guidance whilst following the actual published pdf installation manual.
Great care must be taken when splicing and soldering the various harness wires.
Below: Genie RT harness
Four of the wires from the harness must be soldered to the Genie control PCB. It's critical that the correct colored wires are soldered to the correct control board PCB pads.
Below are photos that show where the Purple and Orange wires must be soldered
Photo below showing where the two white horn wires must be soldered
Photo below shows other cables - solder spliced and and then covered with heatshrink
Practical Soldering Guidance
PCB solder connections
- Make sure that the wire strands are freshly stripped - do NOT try to solder tarnished wire as the solder most likely won't properly adhere
- Apply flux to the wire and then pre-tin the bare wire with solder (if no flux is available, rosin core solder will also improve solder flow)
- Cut excess wire and leave just enough to make good connection to the PCB solder pad
- Remove old solder from the PCB with solder wick
- Use a fine tip soldering iron
- Apply fresh solder to the wire and pad to create a solid solder joint
- Make sure no solder bridges are accidentally created to other close by pads
- Do not overheat the PCB pads as this will damage the control board
- Double check the wires are in fact soldered to the exact PCB pads that are illustrated within the install manual
Wires must be soldered properly to ensure long term reliability
