Gen3 - Calibration - How To Test Load Calibration & Accuracy Inconsistencies

The Gen3-LMS is a Rated Capacity Limiter (RCL) or Actual Capacity Limiter (ACL) system. It is designed to prevent the telehandler from exceeding the rated capacity for the attachment/machine combination in accordance with AS10896.1

In order to meet these requirements the Gen3-LMS is only accurate when the lifted load is close to the rated capacity for the matching boom position. For example if you have a 4T telehandler and you lift a 1T load with the boom fully stowed in the 4T capacity region, the Gen3-LMS will not provide an accurate load reading. But as the boom is extended towards the 1T capacity region the Gen3-LMS load reading will become more accurate.

Also the Gen3-LMS is not able to correctly measure small loads. The Gen3-LMS uses pressure sensors installed in the boom lift cylinder to calculate the load. This is measuring both the weight of the boom and the lifted load. Assuming the weight of the boom is around 2T, lifting the maxed rated load of 4T, would increase the total load to 6T, which is an increase of about 300%. Whereas lifting a small load around 100Kg would only increase the total load by 5%. The Gen3-LMS can not be used with attachments such as 200Kg capacity platforms as it can't measure such a small change in load.

So in order to correctly test the load calibration on a Gen3-LMS system
  1. Use a calibration load around 1/3 of the machine's maximum capacity. For example a 3T machine use a 1T load, 6T machine use a 2T load
    or
Use a calibration load matching the attachment maximum rating. For example use a 600Kg load when testing a truss jib which is rated for a maximum of 600Kg

  2. Lift and extend the calibration load to the 80% warning rated capacity region. For example if using a 2T load, extend the boom to at least the 2.5T capacity region
