Gen3 - Installation - Cable Reeler Installation

Notes
The cable reeler contains the sensors required to measure the boom extension and boom angle - to allow the Gen3 LMS to calculate the boom position.
The cable reeler must be installed at the end of the boom - as close to the next boom segment as possible. The standard cable reeler unit Model 6326 is designed to be mounted on the engine side (or right side) of the boom where it is clear of any angle indicators and/or existing cable reelers.

If there are obstructions preventing mounting on the engine side of the boom, contact EQSS to supply a unit that can be mounted on the cabin side (or left side) of the boom.

The standard cable reeler Model 6326 is designed to extend a maximum of 5 meters. This is usually acceptable for telehandlers with only 1 boom extension segment or if all the boom segments extend proportionally (see Proportionally Extending Boom Segments for an explanation of a proportional boom extension). If the boom extension is greater than 5 meters or the boom segments extend one at a time, then contact EQSS to supply the larger cable reeler Model 6325 which is designed to extend a maximum of 15 meters.

Warning
If the cable reeler wire is extended beyond its design capabilities, the cable reeler will be damaged. Ensure the maximum boom extension is determined and is within the design spool capabilities, before mounting the cable reeler.

The stow switch is mounted in a cable tray at the bottom of the cable reeler. This switch should be pressed when the boom is fully retracted or stowed. The cable reeler should be mounted so the stow switch hangs over the edge of the base boom segment. This will allow a stow switch trigger bracket to mounted on the first extendable boom segment - which will release the switch when the boom is extended. The L shaped bracket is used when the stow switch arm is close to the first extendable boom segment. The head of the stow switch arm can be rotated by removing the black screw on the top of the switch head.

Notes
On some telehandlers the boom may extend a small amount when the hydraulic system is pressurized. If this small extension causes the stow switch to be released, the Gen3 LMS will produce a system fault. Ensure that the arm is triggered and is rotated forward as much as possible.

The cable reeler wire is anchored to the first extendable boom segment if all the boom segments extend proportionally (see Proportionally Extending Boom Segments). If the boom segments extend one at a time the cable reeler wire needs to be anchored to the last extendable boom segment and the wire needs to be run through cable guides mounted on each extendable boom segment to prevent slack in the wire (producing an incorrect length reading).

A number of anchors and guides have been provided with the kit. Select an anchor whose height matches the height of the wire drum on the cable reeler, so that the wire extends and recoils straight without winding up on the edge of the recoil drum. Position the anchor so that the wire extends parallel to the boom. The position of the anchor along the boom if not important since the system will be calibrated to that position.

If the anchor is mounted on the last extendable boom segment, cable guides will need to be installed on each of the extendable segments. The cable guides height will need to selected and positioned to that the wire extends parallel to the boom. Please make sure that the cable does not rub on the cable guides as this will shorten the length of the life of the cable.

Once the cable reeler is installed, connect the supplied 4-Pin 10 metre CAN cable to the M12 screw lock connector at the rear of the cable reeler. Secure the boom cable down to the fixed hydraulic lines running down the boom - using cable ties every 200 mm. If there are no hydraulic lines running down the boom, mount and secure a steel pipe with an inner diameter of 15 mm along the boom and run the CAN cable through the pipe. Cable tie to the flexible hydraulic lines connected to the boom, ensuring that the cable does not stretch when the boom is raised or lowered.

Alert
A cable reeler supplied for the engine side can not be installed on the cabin side and vice versa. Contact EQSS to supply a cable reeler for the correct mounting side.
